Head of Development and People (Maternity Cover)

IN A NUTSHELL:

As the Head of Development and People,  you will be focused on strengthening, selling, and expanding the Centre offer.

We are looking for someone who has experience working in collaborative environments to meet organisational goals and build and manage relationships. They will demonstrate a willingness to learn and develop in order to surface and establish partnerships, lead funding bids, develop our people, and act as a key representative of the Centre to the outside world. 

LOCATION: London-based Other locations considered for the right candidate. Hybrid model.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Fixed term contract - cca. 13 months (full time role) 

PREFERRED START DATE: End of July/ Beginning of August

WHY IS THIS ROLE IMPORTANT FOR THE CENTRE’S WORK?

The Centre for Homelessness Impact is  currently in a phase  of growth and learning, presenting  a huge opportunity for the Head of Development and People  to make a substantial impact. 

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Chief Executive, the post-holder will lead on all aspects of development, marketing and fundraising, and people/HR development; maintaining high level relationships with donors and prospective donors and maximising opportunities to secure new sources of income from individuals, companies and charitable trusts, as well as improving our internal comms.

This role is an exceptional opportunity to be part of a high-profile initiative to deliver creative solutions to homelessness.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO CAN: 

  • Work across the homelessness and housing sector and the What Works Network to identify compelling opportunities for complementary value creation. 
  • Elevate and amplify the Centre’s reputation, influence, and leadership in the sector by building new networks, partnerships, and externally-facing programmes (e.g. roundtables, workshops, publishing opportunities).
  • Keep abreast of the market landscape to continuously push our positioning, in particular via LinkedIn and any other relevant social media platforms; identify and define value that’s already being created, evolve our current funding model, and continuously experiment with ways to create new value and generate revenue.
  • Implement the Centre’s fundraising and marketing plan, and cultivate relationships with potential investors. This will include securing new funding to scale up the Centre’s knowledge mobilisation/ dissemination  programme.
  • Oversee all aspects of fundraising. Maximise voluntary income for the Centre, targeting donors and prospective donors and aiming to attract longer-term commitments to the organisation to ensure its sustainability over time.
  • Develop and deliver an annual fundraising and marketing plan to meet the aspirations of the organisation over the longer-term, working with the Chief Executive and the rest of the team, taking the lead on income generation.
  • Oversee all aspects of HR, including recruitment and onboarding and the professional development of our people.
  • Develop and lead on the delivery of the experiences plan for the centre (including the planning and  delivery of team away days).
  • Provide support to other team members to encourage their successful involvement in the fundraising and marketing processes.
  • Cultivate and develop strong relationships with a portfolio of major donors and prospects
  • Manage a portfolio of major donor/grant-maker/sponsor relationships, adding new names and maximising income from new and existing supporters
  • Advise and support the Chief Executive and other team members on how they might best help develop existing high level relationships.
  • Develop creative approaches to leverage resources in the major giving market, developing a compelling business case for investment, securing pro-bono support and managing new investment effectively.
  • Work collaboratively with the COO, Chief Executive, trustees and other stakeholders on all aspects of fundraising and marketing, producing regular reports of progress against the plan.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND BEHAVIOURS

We are looking for someone who is excited and motivated by the challenge of raising significant funds for a What Works Centre dedicated to improving the lives of people who are homeless through the evidence-led transformation of the field. They will need to be highly articulate, imaginative and resourceful in their approach, and excellent at building strong and enduring relationships.

Your experience includes:

  • A track record of working to, and achieving, financial targets ideally in a fundraising capacity or in a context where skills are transferable 
  • Experience of fundraising in the academic or voluntary sector in an executive or non-executive capacity, or comparable business development experience in another sector
  • Experience of diversifying income streams in a start-up social sector organisation
  • Experience of successfully delivering integrated marketing/fundraising plans
  • An outstanding track record of developing and implementing fundraising strategies, encompassing a broad spectrum of fundraising, and related marketing activity.

You will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • The capacity to build good relationships at senior levels with influencing and negotiating skills, able to understand others’ agendas and goals
  • Excellent knowledge of a broad range of fundraising and related marketing activities, including: major donor fundraising, donor development, events and corporate giving.
  • Commitment to people development, with the ability to foster a culture of improvement and a humble mindset.
  • Evidence of developing and successfully dealing with staffing issues in a compassionate and timely manner, while meeting business needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to explain ideas, methods and concepts to a range of audiences
  • Personal presence, excellent influencing, negotiating and interpersonal skills, strong and confident networker
  • Proven experience of fundraising and marketing experience, or transferable skills and experience from another sector.  
  • Financially literate, accustomed to working within budgets and understanding financial information
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills with an ability to translate strategies into achievable goals
  • Flexible and able to respond quickly and imaginatively to changing priorities
  • Ability to set clear priorities, prioritise ruthlessly and work to tight deadlines
  • Experience of managing a diverse group of stakeholders 
  • Energy, drive, initiative, a self-starter, able to push self and others to achieve, problem solver with a ‘can-do’ mentality
  • Sophisticated knowledge of fundraising and current trends across individuals, trusts, corporations and major donors
  • Excellent presentation and negotiation skills; must have an engaging personal presence and an ability to exert influence
  • High comfort level in working within a start-up environment, within a small, self-directed culture.
